Kansas State was issued a technical foul Friday before its game against Kentucky even began.

With 19:58 left on the pregame clock, K-State sophomore Brian Rohleder dunked the ball while the Wildcats were going through their layup lines. Rohleder was immediately hit with an “administrative technical foul” in accordance with an NCAA rule deeming dunks within 20 minutes of tip-off illegal.

The dunk was a violation of NCAA Rule 10, Section 4, Article 1.3, which states that “a team member dunking or attempting to dunk a dead ball before or during the game, or during any intermission.”

Kentucky point guard Andrew Harrison took the technical free throws, missing the first.

Kansas State coach Bruce Weber said Rohleder, who played a total of 31 minutes this season, had tears in his eyes after the call was made, according to The Kansas City Star. Weber also added that the rule doesn’t make sense to him.

No. 9 seed Kentucky went on to defeat eighth-seeded Kansas State 56-49. Kentucky takes on Wichita State this Sunday.
