manny machadoBaltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado might not recover from knee surgery in time to be ready for Opening Day. Machado had an operation in October to repair a torn ligament in his left knee and was projected to be ready for spring training, but it looks like the O’s will start the season without him, according to Sporting News.

Machado injured his left knee while running to first base in a game against the Tampa Bay Rays near the end of September, and the All-Star hasn’t run in five days.

“It’s scar tissue that flared up and got a little sore and we decided not to push it, which is what we talked about all along,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Saturday.

The 21-year-old recently agreed to a new deal with the Orioles worth $519,000, but has since expressed disappointment with the contract.

“It is disappointing, but at the end of the day, you just have to go out and play,” Machado told the Baltimore Sun.

The Orioles open March 31 against the Boston Red Sox at Camden Yards.
