Marc-Andre ter Stegen will probably want to forget his first Bundesliga goal as soon as he can.
Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper ter Stegen, 21, scored an unfortunately comedic own goal on Saturday in his team’s 1-1 draw against Eintracht Braunschweig.
Ter Stegen is one of European soccer’s hottest goalkeeping properties, but he didn’t look like it for one fateful moment in the 52nd minute of the game. Borussia Monchengladbach fullback Filip Daems played back pass toward ter Stegen, but ter Stegen failed to control it and could only watch in agony as it rolled into his goal. Ter Stegen’s own goal was eerily similar to the one he scored for the United States in Germany’s 4-3 loss back in June 2013.
Rumor has it, ter Stegen will replace Victor Valdes as Barcelona’s starting goalkeeper next season. He’ll see a lot of back passes if he joins the Spanish soccer giant.
Ter Stegen’s own goal tied the game. Coincidentally, Borussia Monchengladbach opened the scoring in the first half thanks to an own goal scored by Eintracht Braunschweig goalkeeper Daniel Davari.
Apparently, the bond between goalkeepers remains as strong as ever.
