NCAA Tournament Thursday Recap: Dayton Keeps Dream Alive

DaytonFour teams have punched their tickets to the Elite Eight. Here’s a recap of Thursday’s NCAA tournament games:

No. 1 Arizona 70, No. 4 San Diego State 64

The top-seeded Wildcats are through to the regional finals after holding off the upset-minded Aztecs in Anaheim. San Diego State’s Xavier Thames led all scorers with 25 points, but Arizona got 15 points apiece from Aaron Gordon, Nick Johnson and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson in the win.

No. 11 Dayton 82, No. 10 Stanford 72

The relentless Flyers advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time since 1984 with a 10-point victory over another tournament underdog, the Stanford Cardinal. Eleven players scored for Dayton, and Jordan Siebert led the team with 18 points. Stanford’s Chasson Randle put up 21 points in the loss, and teammate Dwight Powell chipped in with 17 points and nine rebounds.

No. 1 Florida 79, No. 4 UCLA 68

Florida defeated UCLA 79-68 with the help of Michael Frazier II and Scottie Wilbekin, who scored 19 and 13 points, respectively. The Gators are headed to the Elite Eight for the fourth consecutive year. They’ll take on Dayton on Saturday.

No. 2 Wisconsin 69, No. 6 Baylor 52

Baylor shot just 31.6 percent from the floor Thursday night, falling into a 13-point hole by halftime en route to a 69-52 loss. Wisconsin’s Frank Kaminsky led all scorers with 19 points on 8-for-11 shooting (including 3-for-4 from 3-point range) as the Badgers earned their first Elite Eight bid since 2005. They’ll play top-seeded Arizona on Saturday.
