Gillette StadiumThe New England Patriots will play on a new field surface next season.

A new surface already is being installed at Gillette Stadium, which is upgrading to FieldTurf’s Revolution system and VersaTile drainage and shock underlayment “for its unparalleled player safety and extraordinary durability,” officials said in a press release Monday.

The Patriots first installed FieldTurf in November of 2006 when they switched from natural grass to the artificial surface. The first event on the new surface will be April 12 when the New England Revolution play the Houston Dynamo.

Gillette Stadium’s old FieldTurf surface was showing some wear and tear. It also appeared to have some drainage issues during rainy games.
