Rich Hill returned to the mound for the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday after dealing with the recent loss of his infant son.
Hill reported to Red Sox spring training March 6, and he threw 25 pitches in a minor league intrasquad game Wednesday, according to The Boston Globe. Hill faced six batters, striking out four.
“To get out there today felt great,” Hill told The Globe. “Pitching again and being on the mound competing and doing your best, that’s what I needed to be doing.”
Hill pitched in 40 games for the Red Sox from 2010 through 2012. He spent last season in Cleveland, where he posted a 1-2 record with a 6.28 ERA, 1.78 WHIP, 51 strikeouts and 29 walks for the Indians.
The 33-year-old left-hander has a career record of 24-22, with a 4.74 ERA, 442 strikeouts and 221 walks in 464 2/3 innings.
Hill’s next appearance could be in a game this weekend, according to The Globe.
