Gustav Nyquist has been the hottest scorer in the NHL over the last month or so, and none of his goals were prettier than the one he netted against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday.

After receivingĀ a pass from Detroit Red Wings teammate David Legwand in the neutral zone, Nyquist muscled through Lightning defenseman Matt Carle — who was called for a hook on the play — and put a deke on goalie Ben Bishop. The move carried Nyquist past the goal line, but heĀ maintained puck possession and fired a shot from an improbableĀ angle past Bishop, who had yet to regain his footing in the crease.

A University of Maine product in his first full NHL season, Nyquist has beenĀ one of several young players to contribute for the injury-ravaged Red Wings this year. He’s been especially hot of late, with 11 of his team-leading 27 goals coming in Detroit’s last nine games.

Nyquist’s 27th tally helped propel the Wings to a 3-2 win over the Lightning as they continue to battle for one of the final playoff spots in the Eastern Conference.
