The New England Patriots might not be done adding wide receivers this offseason.
Head coach Bill Belichick and six Patriots staff members worked out projected first-round draft pick Kelvin Benjamin at the Florida State campus last Friday, NFL Media’s Gil Brandt reported Wednesday. Benjamin is 6-foot-5, 240 pounds and ran the 40-yard dash in 4.61 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine in February.
The Patriots already added wide receiver Brandon LaFell and re-signed last year’s No. 1 target, Julian Edelman, this offseason. Slot man Danny Amendola is expected to start in three-receiver sets.
The Patriots drafted wide receivers Aaron Dobson (second round) and Josh Boyce (fourth round) last year. Undrafted rookie receiver Kenbrell Thompkins was a Week 1 starter in 2013.
Signing LaFell and showing interest in projected first-round receivers such as Benjamin, USC’s Marqise Lee and Texas A&M’s Mike Evans could mean the Patriots don’t have a lot of faith in last year’s rookies. This year’s draft-eligible crop of wideouts is considered deep with talent.
