Darrelle Revis and the New York Jets parted ways after the 2012 season, but they could reunite after the 28-year-old cornerback was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Wednesday and became a free agent.
“The (New York) Daily News has learned that the Jets and the Revis camp have discussed the possibility of a reunion one year after a bitter divorce sent the All-Pro cornerback to Tampa,” Manish Mehta wrote Wednesday night. “… It’s unknown whether the communication between the parties will ultimately lead to a reconciliation, according to sources, but the Jets are in need of an established cornerback after releasing Antonio Cromartie earlier this week.”
Brian Costello of the New York Post later reported that Revis’ camp reached out to the Jets to gauge their interest.
Mehta also reported that the New England Patriots, the Jets’ chief rival in the AFC East, are another potential landing place for Revis. In fact, a member of Revis’ camp told Mehta that the cornerback signing with the Patriots was “going to happen.”
The Patriots need a No. 1 cornerback after Aqib Talib signed a six-year, $57 million deal ($26 million guaranteed) with the Denver Broncos on Tuesday night.
Revis tallied 50 combined tackles, one fumble recovery, one sack and two interceptions in 16 games for the Bucs last season. He was traded from the Jets to Tampa Bay in April 2013 after six seasons in New York.
