Calhoun, who coached UConn for 26 years before retiring in 2012, “has significant interest” in the head coaching vacancy at Boston College, multiple sources told ESPN’s Jeff Goodman.
Former BC coach Steve Donahue was fired earlier this week after posting a 54-76 record in four seasons with the Eagles.
Calhoun, a Braintree, Mass., native, has spent his entire basketball career in New England. He played his college ball at American International College in Springfield, Mass., and coached 14 seasons at Northeastern before taking the UConn job.
Calhoun did not confirm interest in the BC job when speaking with ESPN on Friday, but he did hint that he would be open to returning to the coaching ranks.
“I would not be opposed to talking to anyone about basketball,” he said.
Calhoun, 71, won three national championships at UConn and retired with a record of 873-380 — one of eight Division I coaches to win more than 800 games.
BC finished the 2013-14 season 8-24 (4-14 in the Atlantic Coast Conference) and has not appeared in the NCAA tournament since 2009.
