Julian Edelman could be wearing a new uniform in 2014.
Edelman and the New England Patriots could not reach a deal before free agency begins, so the wide receiver will test the open market, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.
The Patriots reportedly offered Edelman a three-year deal and wanted an answer before free agency begins Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET. Apparently they got their answer from the receiver.
Edelman had 105 catches for 1,056 yards with six touchdowns in 2013 as the Patriots’ leading receiver. The Patriots have a similar player in Danny Amendola who can continue to man the slot.
Edelman’s camp didn’t believe the three-year deal was of fair value and “did not like team deadline imposed upon him,” a source told CSNNE.com’s Mike Giardi.
The Patriots still could re-sign Edelman, but they’ll have to compete with teams such as the Cleveland Browns, who reportedly are interested in the versatile receiver. Edelman and the Patriots plan to talk more, NFL Media’s Albert Breer reported.
