Isaac Sopoaga has been informed he’ll be released by the New England Patriots, a source told ESPN’s Mike Reiss on Wednesday, and the team later confirmed that the defensive tackle had been cut.

The Patriots acquired Sopoaga via trade with the Philadelphia Eagles in October to replace Vince Wilfork. Sopoaga saw action in six games and made two tackles before being inactive for the final two regular-season games and both playoff contests. Cutting the nose tackle reportedly will give the Patriots an additional $2.5 million of salary-cap space.

The Patriots could be trimming their cap space so they can afford to sign cornerback Darrelle Revis, whom the Tampa Bay Buccaneers released Wednesday. Revis, who made $16 million in 2013, reportedly is looking for an annual contract of at least $10 million.
