Vince Wilfork will return with the New England Patriots in 2014.
Wilfork and the Patriots agreed to a three-year, $22.5 million contract extension, a source told ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter on Thursday. Wilfork reportedly asked for his release and cleaned out his locker after discussions of an altered contract initially went poorly.
The big nose tackle was entering the last season of a five-year contract he signed in 2010. Wilfork tore his Achilles in Week 4 of the 2013 season.
Wilfork can earn up to $8 million in 2014, a source told the Boston Herald’s Karen Guregian. His deal includes $3 million guaranteed and an option for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. His contract is not guaranteed after this season.
Wilfork hinted at progress in negotiations moments before news broke, tweeting a message to Patriots fans with a picture of an NFL contract.
