The New England Revolution played better in Saturday’s game against the Philadelphia Union than they did in last week’s MLS season opener, but they were shut out for the second time in as many games.
The Revolution (0-2-0) lost 1-0 in Philadelphia as Sebastien Le Toux scored the only goal at the 31st-minute mark of the first half. In the 30th minute, Union forward Leo Fernandes dribbled into the penalty box and sent a pass across the six-yard line to Le Toux, who was able to guide the ball past Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth with a delicate touch.
The Union (1-0-1) dominated for most of the game, and held a 72 percent possession advantage at one point before finishing the 90 minutes with a 60-40 edge. Philadelphia tallied 13 shots (four on goal), six corner kicks and generated several high-quality scoring chances throughout the game. The scoreline could have easily been 2-0, 3-0 or 4-0 Union at the end of the match.
A lack of consistent possession prevented the Revolution from generating many scoring chances in the attacking third of the field. New England created just five shots (three on goal) and three corner kicks. Entering Saturday night’s slate of games, the Revolution are the only scoreless team in the league among those that have played more than one game.
New England will aim for its first win of the season on Saturday, March 22 when it hosts Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the home opener at Gillette Stadium.
