Winger Ales Hemsky scored two goals against the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday. One day later, he’ll be playing for them.
Hemsky, a career Edmonton Oiler, was traded to Ottawa less than three hours before Wednesday afternoon’s NHL trade deadline. In return, the Oilers will receive a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft and a third-rounder in 2015.
Hemsky has nine goals and 17 assists this season, his 11th in the NHL. He told reporters he plans to make the three-hour drive from Edmonton to Calgary on Wednesday and arrive in time for the Senators’ game against the Flames.
Ottawa also made the somewhat surprising decision Wednesday to re-sign defenseman Chris Phillips, whom many teams — including the Boston Bruins — reportedly had interest in. Phillips’ new deal is a two-year contract worth $2.5 million per year.
Phillips, 35, has one goal, 12 assists and a minus-5 rating in 52 games this season.
