Monday marks the 118th annual running of the Boston Marathon. And if you’re not a registered runner in this year’s race, that’s OK. You might find yourself running anyway, from Fenway Park to Kenmore Square, that is.
If you’re attending the early Orioles-Red Sox game and would like to catch more live sports action afterward, then head to these local establishments in Kenmore Square to soak in the race.
For the First-Time Jogger: The Eastern Standard (465 steps from Gate A)
The Eastern Standard is closest to Fenway and best for those who don’t want to do a lot of walking to catch the race. This Kenmore Square staple opens at 7 a.m. on race day and anticipates over 1,000 patrons by 3 p.m. Their full bar opens at that time, too, and they’ll be ready to go. Should you not want to sit at the bar, you can grab a table in their dining room or out on the patio.
This place definitely is for the elegant type. With its European interior, leather seats and waiters in ties, this is a great place to cheer for the marathoners while sipping on Bloody Marys and mimosas.
For the Short-Distance Sprinter: Cornwall’s Pub (520 steps from Gate A)
Cornwall’s Pub is on the other side of Commonwealth Ave. You’ll definitely have to find a way to make it through the actual marathon to get there, but once you arrive, you won’t want to leave. It’s outfitted with what looks like centuries-old Boston relics, which gives it an old-world, British pub charm.
Similar to the Eastern Standard, Cornwall’s is a staple in Kenmore. But it’s geared more for the younger crowd. They, too, open early and are ready to serve the best ale to the usual Boston University crowd and marathon watchers. Should you head there, stay for a while — dine with the undergrads and ask them to help you devise a plan to cross back over Comm Ave. to get to your car.
For the Cross-Country Runner: The Lower Depths Tap Room (714 steps from Gate A)
Last and farthest from Fenway is this small, trendy venue. Be aware, it’ll take some time getting there, and you’ll have to bob and weave through several crowds. But the sweat you produce from all the crowd surfing, you can quench with the special Sam Adams marathon beer they make special from the brewery in honor of Patriots’ Day.
If you don’t like any of these places, there are several other fine establishments around Fenway Park to visit after the game. But you won’t be able to watch the marathon live.
Regardless of where you land, be prepared to endure the day. Wear the right clothing, bring some snacks, and watch the “Fan’s Guide” below if you need some extra help.
