The Australian swimmer and three-time Olympic gold medalist officially announced her retirement from competitive swimming on Wednesday.

Rice had a breakout performance at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, winning gold in the 200-meter individual medley, 400-meter individual medley and 4 x 200 freestyle relay.

The 25-year-old has battled injury in recent years and has not raced competitively since the 2012 Olympic Games in London, where she did not medal.

Outside the pool, Rice found the spotlight in the summer of 2012 when she tweeted a racy photo of herself posing in a new bathing suit she received for her 24th birthday. The tweet sparked a great deal of controversy, as many believed her photo was too provocative to be posted on social media.
