Paul Pierce, Deron Williams, Kevin Garnett, Joe JohnsonPaul Pierce has said many times that he is open to returning to the Boston Celtics. The organization has made it clear the feeling is mutual.

If this is news to you, then you honestly haven’t been paying attention.

For roughly the eleventy-gajillionth time, Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge was asked in a WEEI radio interview Thursday whether the team would be willing to bring Pierce back into the fold. For the eleventy gajillionth time, Ainge said yes, absolutely, maybe.

If that sounds like the same basic response Ainge gives to every question about every player, that’s because it is. Entering the first full offseason of this rebuilding era, Ainge has said more or less the same thing about impending free agents Avery Bradley, Kris Humphries and Jerryd Bayless: If the price is right, they will be back.

Pierce’s potential return to Boston has been an ongoing storyline since he, Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry were traded to the Brooklyn Nets last summer. TV play-by-play voice Mike Gorman has said he thinks Pierce would come back. After winning a game with the Nets at TD Garden in March, Pierce was asked whether he would consider returning to the Celtics in a playing or non-playing capacity.

His response: “Why not?”
