David Letterman announced Thursday that he plans to retire from late-night television next year after 33 years on the air.
Throughout his tenure as the longest-running late-night TV host, Letterman has interviewed celebrities of all kinds, including some of the world’s most influential athletes.
Letterman interviewed a 23-year-old Michael Jordan on the brink of his first Air Jordan sneaker deal and played catch with Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. “Late Show With David Letterman” also has featured David Ortiz fresh off his World Series MVP victory in 2013, a head-to-head tennis matchup with Andy Roddick and a rookie Derek Jeter.
Letterman, 66, often went the unconventional route in his sports coverage, most notably sending his mother to cover the 1994 Winter Olympics in Norway and interviewing Bill Murray as if he were a professional football player in 2012.
