Digger Phelps Announces His Departure From ESPN On Live TV (Video)

The Silver Fox has left the building.

Longtime ESPN college basketball analyst Digger Phelps announced that he was leaving the network during the network’s postgame coverage of Monday night’s NCAA championship game.

Phelps joined ESPN in 1993 and has been a staple on ESPN’s “College Gameday,” as well as numerous other NCAA basketball broadcasts.

Phelps put together an illustrious coaching career before entering the world of broadcasting, spending 20 years as the head coach at Notre Dame from 1971 to 1991. The Fighting Irish went 393-197 during Phelps’ tenure in South Bend and had 14 seasons with 20 wins or more.

“I spent 20 years at Notre Dame as a coach and now 20 years here at ESPN doing a great job with all you people,” Phelps said. “Now it’s time for me to move forward, and this will be my last time on TV.”
