Signing bonuses are important to NFL players because contracts in professional football aren’t fully guaranteed.

Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Evan Mathis, who will enter the third year of a five-year, $25.5 million deal next season, posted a picture of a signing bonus check he received from the team to his Instagram on Friday. He also included a caption that read “Hell yeah, just got my signing bonus.”

Normally this wouldn’t be funny, but the check was for $0. That doesn’t seem like a fair signing bonus for one of the better offensive guards in the league. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported in March that the Eagles made Mathis available for trade.
