The New York Yankees’ roster took a hit — or three — on Tuesday.
Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda will see the last day of his 10-game pine tar suspension on Sunday, but his return to the mound might be further delayed because of tightness in his right latissimus muscle.
“I would think his start Monday is probably in jeopardy,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi told the New York Post about Pineda, who noticed tightness during a simulated game in Tampa. “He threw the first inning and felt a little stiffness and pulled himself.”
Girardi said Pineda will have an MRIÂ before the Yankees determine his re-entry into the rotation.
The Yankees also announced Tuesday that pitcher Ivan Nova will undergo Tommy John surgery — effectively ending his season — and Jacoby Ellsbury has been removed from the starting lineup because of a sore left hand.
“It’s been bothering him for a few days, and he has been playing through it,” Girardi said about the center fielder’s hand, adding there is no structural damage. “Knowing what (weather) is in front of us (Wednesday), I might give him two days.”
Ellsbury is hitting .312 on the season but is 1-for-10 in his past three games.
