The Philadelphia Flyers needed little help on the defensive end Tuesday night after scoring four goals in the first two periods against the New York Rangers.
They got it anyway.
Steve Mason was a monster in net for the home team in its must-win Game 6 of a Stanley Cup playoff series, stopping 34 shots en route to a 5-2 victory.
None of those 34 stops were more impressive than Mason’s acrobatic glove save in the third period. After a Flyers turnover led to a breakaway, Rangers forward Carl Hagelin fired a wrist shot toward the top left corner of the net, but Mason somehow snagged it out of the air before falling backward on the ice. While his team already led 4-0 thanks to a hat trick from Wayne Simmonds, Mason’s effort squashed any chance of a Rangers comeback.
The Flyers and Rangers will face off in a winner-take-all Game 7 on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden. Philadelphia has won only one game at the Garden all season, but if Steve Mason is between the pipes, anything can happen.
