BOSTON — While Jacoby Ellsbury didn’t receive the Johnny Damon treatment, the New York Yankees outfielder wasn’t exactly greeted by too many cheers, either.
Ellsbury received mostly boos Tuesday before his first at-bat at Fenway Park as a member of the Yankees. The former Red Sox outfielder said before Tuesday’s game he was unsure what type of crowd response he’d receive, but we now have an answer and it isn’t all that flattering.
Ellsbury, who was drafted by the Red Sox in 2005, spent parts of seven seasons with Boston before signing a seven-year, $153 million contract with the Yankees over the offseason. The 30-year-old expressed great admiration for his former organization before Tuesday’s game, but clearly, Red Sox fans aren’t too thrilled about him jumping ship to join Boston’s biggest rival.
The boo-to-cheer ratio before Ellsbury’s first at-bat was roughly 75-to-25, if we’re going to try to quantify things. The veteran did receive some love, however, when a video tribute was played on the Fenway Park big screen before the second inning.
