John Terry Cries After Chelsea’s Champions League Semifinal Loss (Video)

Spare a thought for John Terry. Yes, John Terry.

Terry was distraught following Chelsea’s 3-1 loss to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League semifinal Wednesday.

Terry openly wept on the field after the referee blew the final whistle. Both teammates and opponents consoled the Chelsea captain.

Terry, 33, suffered another emotional blow in his Champions League career. In the 2008 final, the Chelsea defender missed a crucial penalty kick in the final defeat against Manchester United. Suspension and injury kept Terry on the sidelines, as Chelsea triumphed in the Champions League final in 2012 and the UEFA Europa League final in 2013, respectively.

Terry thought he might actually have the chance to lead Chelsea to European glory this time around. It wasn’t meant to be, and this might have been his last opportunity to lift the European Cup after finally playing in the big game.

Terry could become a free agent this summer, as his contract expires in June. Despite Terry enjoying one of his finest-ever seasons in 2013-14, there’s no guarantee that he and Chelsea will agree to a contract extension, which would take his Blues career into its 17th season.

Was Terry crying because it was his last Champions League stand at Stamford Bridge? Or was it simply out of sheer disappointment? Time will tell.

See a tearful Terry in the video below.
