The Boston Bruins couldn’t figure out Jimmy Howard during 60 minutes of play in Game 1, as the goaltender’s shutout performance lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 1-0 win. It didn’t take Bruins forward Justin Florek nearly as long to solve Howard on Sunday afternoon.

Early in the first period, the Red Wings dumped the puck back into their own zone to get some fresh bodies on the ice. Howard came out to play the puck and dished it to Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith, but there was some miscommunication between the two. Howard’s pass bounced off the skate of Smith and found the only Bruin anywhere near the puck — Florek.

The rookie, who was hustling to chase down the loose puck, took advantage of the turnover and sniped it past a sprawling Howard to give the Bruins a one-goal lead.

Florek, who is playing because of injuries to Daniel Paille and Chris Kelly, played in just four games with the Bruins this season. It was his first career Stanley Cup playoff goal.
