kevin edsonA man charged with creating a disturbance after two unattended backpacks were discovered at the Boston Marathon finish line was arraigned Wednesday in Boston Municipal Court.

The man, identified as 25-year-old Kevin Edson of Wakefield, Mass., was seen walking barefoot down Boylston Street on Tuesday night and setting down a large backpack at the finish line.

The Boston Police Department cleared the street for several hours while police searched the backpack, which reportedly contained a timed cooking device similar to a rice cooker, the Boston Globe reported. Edson told arresting officers that the device was not explosive, according to a police report filed in court.

“I knew what I was doing, it was being conceived in my head. It’s symbolism,’’ Edson allegedly told police. “The performance got the best of me.”

Edson, who has a history of hospitalization for mental illness, faces felony charges of possession or use of a hoax device and making a false bomb threat, as well as misdemeanor charges of disturbing the peace, disorderly conduct and disturbing a public assembly.
