Jets’ Michael Vick Will Wear No. 8, Won’t Ask Geno Smith For No. 7

For the first time since high school, Michael Vick will take the field in something other than a No. 7 jersey.

When the 33-year-old quarterback signed with the New York Jets on March 21, he did so with the knowledge that his favorite number was occupied by current starting quarterback Geno Smith.

While one might expect Vick to wrest No. 7 from the 23-year-old Smith, the veteran QB insisted that Smith keep his jersey and recently took to Twitter to ask his followers what new number he should rock in the Meadowlands.

Apparently Vick has made his choice, as he recently posted an Instagram photo (which he later deleted) of him a No. 8 Jets jersey. Check out the photo below, courtesy of For the Win.

Vick’s new choice has a decent history, as the No. 8 has been occupied by the likes of Hall of Famers Troy Aikman and Steve Young as well former New Orleans Saints quarterback Archie Manning.

In the present, however, Vick will share No. 8 with a list of fairly mediocre quarterbacks, including Matt Schaub, Matt Hasselbeck, Kyle Orton and Brian Hoyer.

As Vick enters the twilight of his career, though, he will be more focused on getting back on the field after playing backup to Nick Foles in 2013 with the Philadelphia Eagles.

If he can’t take Geno Smith’s jersey, winning the starting quarterback job from him would be a more than welcome consolation prize.
