Boston Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli is a man who likes beards. He’s not, however, a man who likes all beards.
Napoli’s former team, the Texas Rangers, is in town for a three-game series, giving him a chance to check out the new facial hair being sported by Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus.
Andrus always has been relatively clean cut throughout his five-year career in the majors, but he showed up to spring training this season with a bushy beard that looks like something out of the 2013 Red Sox playbook.
Andrus’ former teammate isn’t a fan.
“Elvis’ beard is terrible, by the way — horrendous,” Napoli, one of the few Sox players to keep his beard after last season, said Tuesday in an interview with 105.3 FM in Dallas (via ESPN.com). “He cuts half his chin off, too. Yeah, it’s terrible. He looks like Abe Lincoln.
“He has to cut that thing off. It’s so bad, it’s almost embarrassing. I can’t even look at him, it’s so bad.”
Andrus’ facial insulation doesn’t seem to be hurting his game, though. He has a hit in all seven games for the Rangers this season, and his nine hits overall rank second on the team behind Alex Rios.
