U.S. Winter Olympians were instructed to not take pictures when they met President Barack Obama at the White House last week, according to The Associated Press.
This strict photo rule comes after Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz took a selfie with President Obama during a White House ceremony honoring the 2013 World Series champions. The White House has since condemned the photo, criticizing it as a publicity stunt by Samsung.
Freestyle skier Emily Cook told the AP that nobody banned general pictures during the visit to the White House, but that athletes were told to keep their phones in their pockets when they were in line to meet the president.
The Olympians were visiting the White House after competing in the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi in February. The White House noted that it’s standard for an official White House photographer to take picture when large groups such as athletic teams visit.
