The Boston Red Sox put a fitting close on their magical 2013 season Friday at Fenway Park with a World Series ring ceremony that featured a moving tribute to the heroes and victims of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.
The ceremony kicked off with a video montage of the Red Sox’s season. Then the six championship banners the team has won since it moved to Fenway were unfurled over the Green Monster, capped by a large 2013 World Series champions banner that spanned the left field wall.
The ring distribution began with those affected by the marathon bombing, as survivors and their families were handed their own World Series rings while being greeted by Red Sox ownership.
After the players received their rings, a moment of silence was held for Boston firefighters Michael Kennedy and Edward Walsh, who lost their lives while responding to a Back Bay fire March 27.
The ceremony closed with a performance by Boston’s own Dropkick Murphys, who performed the National Anthem alongside the Boston Symphony Orchestra, along with their hit song, “I’m Shipping Up to Boston.”
