Richard Sherman is going to bat for his old Little League teammate, DeSean Jackson.
Sherman defended Jackson, and his alleged “gang ties,” in a column for themmqb.com. The key argument in Sherman’s piece is that Jackson, who agreed to terms with the Washington Redskins on Tuesday night, shouldn’t be judged by who he hangs out with off the field. Sherman, who has never got into off-the-field trouble, said he hangs out with some shady characters, as well, thanks to his Los Angeles upbringing.
Sherman also wrote about the double standard the NFL holds regarding race and how it relates to crime and character off the field. Sherman compared Jackson’s treatment — being released by the Philadelphia Eagles — to how the NFL dealt with Eagles receiver Riley Cooper and Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay.
Cooper was videotaped yelling a racial slur, and he got fined and counseled before receiving a new contract in the offseason. Irsay wasn’t attacked for his arrest, “Instead, poor millionaire Mr. Irsay needs help, some wrote,” Sherman pointed out in his column.
