If we’re bringing you a story from Iran’s Azadegan League, or second division, you know it has to be good.

Last week’s Azadegan League game between Nassaji Mazandaran and Shahrdari Yasuj caught the soccer world’s attention because of the desperate act of one player. One who wasn’t even in the game yet.

In the second half, a Nassaji Mazandaran player won the ball from a Shahrdari Yasuj defender, dribbled around the goalkeeper and shot at the open goal.

He should have celebrated a certain goal, but one of the Shahrdari Yasuj substitutes jumped onto the field — while still wearing his warm-up bib — and blocked the shot.

The game stopped amid the surreal scene, as the referee figured out what to do. Eventually, the referee sent off the substitute and awarded Nassaji Mazandaran an indirect free kick, which they failed to convert into a goal.

Shahrdari Yasuj lost to Nassaji Mazandaran by a score of 2-0 despite the substitute’s antics.

Cheaters never win, especially in Iran’s second division.
