After the Chicago Cubs neglected to invite Sammy Sosa to Wrigley Field’s 100th anniversary celebration on Wednesday, the retired slugger expressed his desire to reconcile with the Cubs organization.
“I should have been there; I would have liked to have been there,” Sosa told ESPN Deportes. “The Cubs know where to find me, and I hope to have the chance to clear up any misunderstanding.”
Sosa played 13 seasons with the Cubs and is their all-time home run leader with 545, but he departed from the team on a sour note in 2004 when he left Wrigley Field early during the final game of the season. Sosa was also mentioned on a New York Times list of players who failed performance enhancing drug tests in 2003 and was caught using a corked bat that same year.
“There are some things Sammy needs to look at and consider prior to having an engagement with the team,” Cubs spokesman Julian Green said.
Sosa has also admitted that he wants his No. 21 to be retired, but his current priorities lie with making amends with his long-time home team.
“I think there is something that has to be resolved,” Sosa said. “Time has given me the maturity to reflect upon many things, including knowing that one side doesn’t have to be right all the time.”
