Steven Gerrard has competed for major trophies throughout his 16-year career as a professional soccer player, but he hasn’t been involved in anything like this before.
Liverpool’s dramatic victory over Manchester City on Sunday left the Reds four wins away from claiming their first Premier League championship in 24 years.
Following the game, Liverpool captain Gerrard expressed his delight at the Reds’ rise to the top and said he is approaching a defining moment in his stellar career.
“I’m enjoying it, it’s great to play with so many top players,” Gerrard said, according to LiverpoolFC.com. “The journey I’ve had all the way through the years, there have been ups and downs. At the moment, I’m loving every minute of it.
“I feel 21 again, playing with all these top players. It’s probably going to be the biggest month of my career coming up now. I’ll give it everything I’ve got.”
Gerrard cried on the field after Sunday’s win against fellow title contender Manchester City. The 33-year-old explained the significance of the result before issuing Liverpool’s rallying cry for the road ahead.
“It’s probably the biggest statement we’ve made so far this season,” Gerrard said. “But the message is to stay calm and keep going — there are still four cup finals left.”
Gerrard has never won a Premier League title, and leading his boyhood club to glory this season would be a crowning achievement in his career.
