BOSTON — The umpires were busy reviewing plays in the early part of Sunday’s Red Sox-Athletics game at Fenway Park.

Shortly after Athletics manager Bob Melvin challenged the game’s first play, umpiring crew chief Jeff Kellogg decided to take another look at a play at the plate in the third inning involving Red Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski and A’s third baseman Josh Donaldson.

Brandon Moss doubled into the left field corner, and Donaldson was cut down at home while trying to score from first base. The umpires reviewed the play to make sure Pierzynski didn’t illegally block the plate but ultimately upheld the initial call.

There was some brief confusion on the play, as Melvin came out for a discussion despite already using his challenge on the game’s first play. The umpires decided to review the play, however, because they have the authority to review such plays on their own.
