The U.S. hockey team lost 6-1 to Russia on Monday at the 2014 World Championships in Minsk.
The highlight of the matchup was Alex Ovechkin beating American goaltender Tim Thomas on a penalty shot, which increased Russia’s lead to 2-0 going into the first intermission.
Russia extended its advantage to 3-0 before Detroit Red Wings winger Justin Abdelkader got the U.S. on the board with a second-period goal. However, the Russians added three more goals in the second frame to earn the victory after a goal-less final period.
After giving up his fifth goal of the game, Thomas was replaced by David Leggio, a member of the Washington Capitals’ organization. Thomas had allowed just three goals in the two previous games combined.
The loss drops the Americans to 2-0-1 in the preliminary round. With six points, Team USA is in a second-place tie in Group B with host nation Belarus. Russia leads the pack with a 3-0-0 mark.
The Americans’ next game is Thursday against Latvia. Each team plays a total of seven group-stage games.
