Ryan Mallett is stuck playing second fiddle to Tom Brady for one more season, it seems.
New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick expressed his disinterest in dealing the backup quarterback Thursday afternoon during an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio.
“That’s not really something that we’re that interested in,” Belichick said to Jim Miller and Pat Kirwan about Mallett. “Ryan’s done a good job for us. Fortunately for our team — maybe unfortunately for Ryan — he hasn’t really had any playing time in the last three years.”
It would be logical to trade Mallett after the Patriots selected Eastern Illinois quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft. Having too many quarterbacks is a problem Belichick apparently likes to have.
“We feel like we have a good quarterback situation,” Belichick said. “That’s not a good position to not feel good about.”
Mallett was taken in the third round of the 2011 NFL draft out of Arkansas. He’s completed only one pass on four attempts in three seasons with the Patriots.
