The most fascinating goal of Wednesday night’s Chicago Blackhawks-Los Angeles Kings Western Conference final matchup was actually not even a goal.
During the first period of Game 2, the Blackhawks were denied more so by physics than Jonathan Quick. Peter Regin was primed to give Chicago a 1-0 lead when he was looking at an open net following a scramble near the crease. As Patrick Kane’s backhander fluttered behind Quick, Regin only needed to tap the puck in, but like something out of a video game, the puck changed direction and refused to cross the line.
The puck bounced off of the crossbar and off of Regin’s stick, just as he was being cross-checked by Willie Mitchell, and while it’s hard to tell exactly what happens next, something magically happened to prevent the puck from finding the back of the net.
Don’t feel too bad for the Blackhawks, though, because they scored on the ensuing power play.
