The St. Louis Blues made a splash at the trade deadline when they landed goalie Ryan Miller in a trade with the Buffalo Sabres. It now appears that Miller was brought in simply as a rental.
The Blues announced Monday morning that they have agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension with goaltender Brian Elliott. The extension reportedly is worth $7.5 million.
Elliott, who was a 2011-12 All-Star in his first season with the Blues, appeared in 31 games this season. He posted a .922 save percentage to go along with a 1.96 goals against average and recrorded four shutouts.
With Elliott signed on for three more years, and prospect Jake Allen waiting in the wings, this likely means that St. Louis is moving on from Miller, as he’s set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
The Blues acquired Miller shortly before the NHL trade deadline on Feb. 28. Miller and forward Steve Ott were sent to St. Louis in exchange for goalie Jaroslav Halak, forward Chris Stewart and two draft picks, including a 2015 first-rounder. Miller played 19 regular-season games with the Blues and posted 10-8-1 record with a .903 save percentage and 2.47 GAA. Miller wasn’t very effective in the Blues’ first-round playoff series. He finished with a save percentage of just .897, and the Chicago Blackhawks eliminated the Blues in six games.
