With the hockey media still buzzing about Shawn Thornton’s water-squirting antics and resulting fine, one Boston bar has hatched a creative idea to bring in fans for the Bruins’ Game 6 Stanley Cup playoff matchup with the Montreal Canadiens.
The Harp, located directly across the street from TD Garden, is hosting a “Pay Thorty’s Fine” watch party Monday night with hopes of donating the amount of the winger’s fine — $2,820.52 — to the Shawn Thornton Foundation.
“We don’t necessarily think what he did was right, but we think the fine is a little ridiculous, especially because it’s sort of an arbitrary amount,” Hannah Kempski, a spokesperson for The Harp, told Boston Magazine. “I mean, I can’t speak for all of the Bruins fans, but I think it was kind of a silly thing, and he’s probably sorry he did it in hindsight. But it’s a competitive sport. We really want this, we want the Cup again.”
Thornton did apologize for his squirting of Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban on Saturday, expressing regret over the fact that the “silly incident” overshadowed the Bruins’ 4-2 win in Game 5. The B’s can punch their ticket to the Eastern Conference finals with a win Monday night in Montreal.
