BOSTON — Clay Buchholz’s 2014 season just became even worse.
The Red Sox placed Buchholz on the 15-day disabled list because of a hyperextended left knee before Wednesday night’s game against the Atlanta Braves at Fenway Park. Reliever Alex Wilson was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Buchholz’s spot on the active roster.
Buchholz suffered the injury on a pitch in the fourth inning of Monday’s start against the Braves, Red Sox manager John Farrell said before Wednesday’s game. Buchholz threw a bullpen session Wednesday at Fenway, after which the Red Sox decided to place the right-hander on the DL, retroactive to Tuesday.
Buchholz is 2-4 with a 7.02 ERA in 10 starts this season. He allowed six earned runs and eight walks in three innings of work Monday. Farrell said Tuesday that Buchholz lost seven pounds while battling the Atlanta heat during Monday’s outing.
Wilson returns to the Red Sox for his third major league stint of 2014. The 27-year-old’s only appearance for Boston thus far this season was a one-inning relief appearance Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field.
