Montreal Canadiens forward Brandon Prust will have a hearing with the NHL on Friday to discuss his nasty-looking hit on the New York Rangers’ Derek Stepan the previous night.
Prust’s teammate, David Desharnais, probably is confused as to why that’s the case.
Prust likely will face some sort of supplemental discipline from the league after he laid out Stepan during the first period of Montreal’s 3-2 overtime win in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals. The big hit, which wasn’t ruled a penalty on the ice, left Stepan with a broken jaw that he played through after leaving the game for a few minutes.
You’d be hard-pressed to find many people who didn’t take exception with Prust’s hit. He appeared to hit Stepan up near the head — a claim backed up by the jaw injury — and it sure looked late. If you lay that evidence out for Desharnais, though, he’ll probably argue with you, as he did with reporters Friday afternoon.
