Clay Buchholz was forced to throw a few more pitches than he would have liked Thursday against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field.
It looked like Boston Red Sox catcher David Ross ended the sixth inning — Buchholz’s final frame — with a pickoff of Joe Mauer at first base. The Twins challenged the play, though, and the umpires overturned the initial call, extending the sixth inning for Minnesota.
It didn’t matter in the end, as Buchholz struck out Trevor Plouffe to end the inning and his outing. Plus, the umpires correctly overturned the call, as first baseman Mike Napoli seemed to miss Mauer with his tag despite Ross’ snap throw being delivered in time.
The Red Sox rallied for two runs in the ninth inning to tie the game 3-3, but Aaron Hicks propelled the Twins to victory with an RBI single off Andrew Miller in the bottom of the 10th inning.
