Los Angeles Dodgers minor leaguer Miguel Olivo is learning the hard way that you don’t solve problems in the real world like Mike Tyson does in the boxing ring.
Olivo was suspended Wednesday by the Dodgers organization for allegedly biting the ear of teammate Alex Guerrero during a dugout altercation the previous day in Salt Lake City, according to ESPN.com. The two play for the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes and were involved in an incident that resulted in Guerrero losing part of his ear.
Olivo is on the suspended list indefinitely, “pending the completion of an investigation.” The Dodgers haven’t said much about the incident, which forced Guerrero to undergo plastic surgery. He could miss as much as five weeks, according to ESPN’s sources.
Neither Olivo nor his representatives have commented publicly.
Guerrero’s agent, Scott Boras, suggested that his client could take legal action.
“It’s assault and battery,” Boras said, via CBS Sports. “There’s nothing he could have said to prompt this.”
Salt Lake City police said Guerrero declined to file a complaint about the incident, which would have been the first step toward criminal prosecution.
Olivo is back in the minors after being in the majors since 2002, including eight games with the Dodgers this season. He has 3,765 at-bats in the big leagues, with 145 home runs, 490 RBIs and a .240 batting average for eight different teams.
Update (2:20 p.m.):Â The Dodgers announced they have released Olivo from their roster.
