The final round of the Madeira Islands Open took a tragic turn on Sunday.
European Tour caddie Ian MacGregor died after suffering an apparent heart attack on the ninth fairway of the course.
The 52-year-old Zimbabwe native had been caddying for Scottish golfer Alastair Forsyth when he collapsed to the ground on what was Forsyth’s final hole of the round.
“It is with great sadness and deep regret that we report the untimely passing of caddie Ian MacGregor during play on the final day of the Madeira Islands Open,” the European Open said in a statement.
The tournament was temporarily suspended following MacGregor’s tragic death, but play resumed after long consultations with other players and caddies. A moment of silence was held on the course prior to the resuming of play.

British golfer Daniel Brooks won the tournament in a playoff.
