Alfredo Aceves has been called up by the New York Yankees from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Aceves, who last pitched in the majors last season with the Boston Red Sox, will join the Yankees’ bullpen. Reliever Chris Leroux was designated for assignment to make room on the active roster for Aceves.
Aceves signed with the Yankees at the end of spring training after the right-hander opted out of his contract with the Baltimore Orioles. The polarizing pitcher’s final appearance with the Red Sox last season came on July 9.
The Red Sox opted not to re-sign Aceves following the 2013 season. The 31-year-old seemingly fell out of favor because of ineffectiveness and strange behavior, although there was a point at which he was a valuable member of Boston’s pitching staff.
Aceves went 10-2 with a 2.61 ERA in 55 appearances (four starts) with Boston in 2011. The Red Sox turned to him as their closer in 2012, but — like Boston’s season — the experiment was a disaster. Aceves blew eight saves in 33 chances while posting a 2-10 record and 5.36 ERA.
This isn’t Aceves’ first rodeo in the Bronx. Aceves, who went 4-1 with a 4.86 ERA in 11 appearances (six starts) with the Red Sox last season, spent parts of three seasons with the Yankees from 2008 through 2010.
