Gilbert Arenas has become one of the first athletes to publicly offer support for disgraced Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling.

The former Washington Wizards star posted a message on his personal Instagram account Monday afternoon — a few hours before Sterling’s interview with Anderson Cooper aired on CNN — saying he accepts Sterling’s apology “as a man who’s made a mistake or two in life.”

“Forgiveness will destroy racism,” Arenas wrote, “not more hatred.”

Arenas was suspended for much of the 2009-10 after being convicted on gun charges following an incident in the Wizards’ locker room. He returned to play two more seasons with the Wizards, Orlando Magic and Memphis Grizzlies before retiring in 2012.
