It’s not completely out of the ordinary for baseball games to end on strange plays — we saw a walk-off obstruction call and a game-ending pickoff in the 2013 World Series alone — but it’s always amusing when they do.
In an American League Central matchup Wednesday night, the Cleveland Indians were able to finish a series sweep of the first-place Detroit Tigers thanks to a walk-off balk committed by Al Albuquerque in the 13th inning.
Indians outfielder David Murphy had tied things up with a two-run homer in the ninth to send it into extras. The Tigers even scored a run in the top of the 13th, but a two-out RBI single to tie it in the bottom of the inning brought Albuquerque to the mound with runners on second and third for the Indians.
Albuquerque intentionally walked Yan Gomes to load the bases, but it didn’t matter, as his balk sent Asdrubal Cabrera to the plate with the winning run.
