Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston hasn’t done the best job staying out of trouble since his team won the BCS national championship in January.
His father might be taking matters into his own hands to change that.
Speaking to USA TODAY, Jameis’ father, Antonor Winston, revealed that he is working with the school to hire a handler who would be with his son at all hours of the day.
“He’s supposed to have somebody around him 24/7,” Antonor said. “He’s a Heisman Trophy winner so (he’s) definitely not supposed to be by (himself).”
Winston found himself in an unexpected spotlight in late April after he was issued a citation for shoplifting crab legs from a Publix supermarket in Tallahassee. The 20-year-old was suspended from the Florida State baseball team for four days but later apologized, calling his theft “a moment of youthful ignorance.”
“It’s just a different standard for (Jameis) and Johnny (Manziel),” Antonor added. “He’s just got to endure, just make better decisions and he’s just got to endure that.”
Winston also was the subject of a much more serious incident last December when he was the target of a three-week investigation into the sexual assault of a 19-year-old Florida State student. The charges were later dropped.
